Moda Jelly Rolls
March 3, 2008
Jelly Rolls are the new things to hit the shelves lately in our local Patchwork and Quilting shop. As an avid collector of beautiful fabric I have to admit that I love them. Because I enjoy hand applique I often refer to myself as the “10cm Queen”. My idea is to have a lot of a little. Which means I find myself requesting 10-20cm of lots of different fabrics. Which I’m sure must annoy even the most patient shop owner. I don’t mean to be difficult it’s just that I like my stash to be full of lots of different fabrics and I would often rather have 10cm of 10 different fabrics than have 1 metre of only 1 fabric. Reason being I enjoy using small amounts of fabric in hand applique projects or hand pieced traditional quilts using templates. So you can understand my excitement when I discovered jelly rolls.
When first announced by fabric shops that they stocked jelly rolls you could be excused from thinking that you local patchwork shop was venturing out into bakery products (which just quietly would have been fine by me as well). Although I wasn’t disappointed to learn what a jelly rolls really was. In fact they look good enough to have just lying around. Almost too special to undo and start cutting up.

My favourite is from Moda’s Shangri-la range. As shown above. You can view the fabrics included by going to the Moda home page. Here is the link to the Shangri-la range for you. It’s in a PDF format. Hopefully your computer will allow you to view the document without too much difficulty.

I just adore the blue they have used in this range.
Pieces to Treasure currently have then on offer for $50 AU. Click here for the link to the page. I’m sure you’ll find a jelly roll just to admire or to make something magnificent out of.
Pieces to Treasure also have some patterns and books specifically designed for jelly rolls to provide you with some inspiration.
Happy fabric and jelly roll hunting!
Warmly Lenna
